Bivy Sack Q&A

Oct 24 2005

Does your bivy sack breathe enough to get rid of condensation? Do you find that your bag starts to feel damp after two or three days of use? Over on 24hourcampfire.com there is a forum on backpack hunting and some guys are complaining of this. I am in the market for a bivy; could you recommend one? I am 6’4” 250lbs.

Thanks,
Kyle Cordano

Kyle,
Yes, my Outdoor Research bivy does condensate some. I think all bivy shelters do a little. I will say that, despite this condensation issue, I have never felt damp when using one. The outside of my sleeping bag might have a little moisture on it but it never makes it all the way in, which is why it’s imperative that you use a high quality sleeping bag in combination with a bivy sack. I am sold on my bivy sack as I have relied on it in the worst of weather for years and it has always protected me adequately from the elements.

Another option is a small two-man tent. There are some killer shelters available and they are not too heavy either. You are a pretty big guy and a tent would surely give you more room to operate. Check out www.backcountrygear.com. I have learned a lot on this site.
