Eagle Cap wilderness hunt Q&A

Nov 17 2005

Cameron,
My name is Sheddric and I am from Utah. I saw your Do-It-Yourself hunt in the Eagle Cap wilderness hunt in Oregon on TV and I would like to find out more information on the general area you were in. Oregon Fish and Game sent me a proclamation and I bought a topo map. I am a DIY hunter and would like you to elaborate on the hunt a little like location, tags for deer and elk, etc. I know you were quite a few miles in and my friend and I like that type of hunting in the high country. We are planning on hunting that area this year but would like to get some more information from you if possible.
Thank you for your time.

Sheddric,
The deer and elk tags are over the counter for this area and unlimited, even to non-residents. I look for a trail that dives straight back into the wilderness at least eight miles. This is where I start my hunt and then go from there. By getting this far back the crowd really thins out. I have hunted most of this wilderness from all sides and that TV show was filmed in a few different areas that can be accessed from different trailheads. This country is ideal, but the game can be hard to find at times. I have a few pockets that seem to always produce, but it has taken time to learn—years really. No real secrets to successfully hunting this country just bring good glasses and a lot of motivation.
