As general archery seasons close across western states in October, opportunities for mule deer and whitetail decline for most bowhunters. However, for the opportunistic hunter seeking to extend their bow season, there are options. Blacktails in Oregon, along with special mule deer draws. And then there’s the Whitetail deer. The most sought after big game animal in the country. Wyoming has some late season whitetail opportunities that are any weapon. You will be competing with gun hunters, but a little work and finding pockets of deer can give the hard core bowhunter fantastic opportunity. Let’s not forget about some of the late season archery only general tag areas that you can buy OTC that are scattered across the state of Idaho. And lastly, my home state of Montana is the exception with a general rifle deer and elk season that runs for five weeks through the end of November. Do consider that in general, quality of bucks is lacking across most public lands here, but once again, pockets of good hunting can be found away from the orange army with some effort. For the best trophy quality in Montana, seek private access.
