View Full Version : Southwest of Cody info?

Anyone familiar with the west slope of Carter Mountain southwest of Cody, near Valley? Am considering this area for a future backpack bowhunt for mule deer. Have a couple of drainages in mind and am wondering if this area generally holds good mule deer numbers? How about elk. I'll assume this is National Forest, but is access to the forest available? This would be an early season hunt, how bad is hunter concentration in this area in September? If you'd like to PM me with info that would be OK. email@example.com Thanks, Dale

As for deer and other specific details about that area, I can't help you out much. But, I do know the elk hunting at Carter is great. Had a cow tag there last year and seen dozens and dozens of bulls. I'd love to draw a bull tag there but fat chance of that happening.

Elkoholic, Thanks for your info. Is access to this area all public land? I'll assume you didn't see much for deer as you didn't mention any. Do you think that this area isn't good deer habitat?

Werre300, It looks to me like the unit must be 113 or 117, probably 117. How many points did you need? Were there good numbers of deer? How about hunter numbers? Thanks

There were not good numbers at all in 117 but we hunted the north half. This unit used to be much better and the population is way down now according to locals. From my understanding 116 season used to be before 117 and lots of those deer got chased up high in 117. Most of the monsters are on private in 116 and sounds like they stay around the farms. I would say if your going stay high and glass a lot and you may not see deer everyday at all. We didn't hunt the south half but there are deer to be found there too. We didn't see any deer hunters just lots of sheep hunters.
