View Full Version : Montana High Country Mule Deer

Well, my buddy and I backpacked nine miles deep into the Montana high alpine backcountry for the opener of early rifle. This is a public land, OTC hunt for mule deer. Deer numbers are not high in this area, but if you find a lone buck, he is often an old one. That is the case with this deer. He only had a few teeth left. He was in full, beautiful, untouched velvet with a 4 inch horizontal kicker on his driver's side ... before the shot(s). I kept putting shots on him to try to keep him on the ribbon cliff he was on, but of course he rolled right off. The velvet was shredded, and the kicker was MIA. My buddy and I searched the path of the fall, and through some miracle, my buddy found it in the rocks. My taxi should be able to fix the kicker and put some synthetic velvet on.

The pack-out was brutal, but worth it!

Something like the Bob.

I am saving some pictures for submitting to the EHJ. I will keep my fingers crossed, and maybe make the annual DIY issue. I also have some good video.

Nice job. Is he a 4x3 or 4x4 (not counting the busted cheater)?

Bitterroot Bulls
09-18-2011, 06:39 PM
Mainframe 4X3. Missing a G4. All the bone on that side went to the G1 and kicker. He has a couple of burr points that could possibly score under the velvet as well. I think those weak and missing G4s would kill the score, but I think this is one of those "forget about the score" bucks rather than a "what if" buck.

It still didn't take much field judging to call him a shooter, and the whole hunt was a true adventure. I really like him. He scores way up there in the Bitterroot Bulls book!

Will do, IKIC. It is going to be a while. My taxi is good, but he ain't fast (or cheap), and the velvet issue won't help the expediency.

Is that artificial velvet or is it the same one?

Bitterroot Bulls
11-29-2012, 07:41 PM
It is artificial. I have to say, though, that it really turned out realistic looking. I have seen some that looked plain horrible.

From what I read in the article and have seen posted so far on some other posts this year, it does not look to me like the end of the story Matt. It's more like a chapter to what looks and sounds like an awesome book. Congratulations again Matt. God bless you!

My brother and I made our first high country pack in hunt this year. After our own experience and seeing stories like this, I know why we are are all hooked. You coudn't make up some of the crazy things we go through that make these hunts so cool.

congrats!!

Hey BB, your taxi did a great job on your mount. The velvet looks really natural.......I to have seen some REALLY bad velvet restorations that pretty much ruin the mount. I picked up my Nevada bull yesterday from my taxi but won't hijack your thread with the picks. I'll just say it's like a awesome early christmas present.

Thats why i asked...it looks really good for being artificial, although from seeing him after the tumble, i couldn't see how they could have repaired the original that nice. Great looking buck!

Bitterroot, My brother and I are trying to plan a muley hunt to Montana and it is a little confusing on the G & F website. I was wondering if you had any ideas of what district would be a good one to go and get after a muley? I was thinking 314, 301 or that area, or else I was looking around 332 and even the areas around 413.
Thanks,
Tony

Bitterroot Bulls

Tony,

Those are all General Mule Deer areas, so no special permit required, get your NR tag, and you're hunting deer. The 3XX districts are primarily elk units. Those are not high deer density units, but you might find a good one in there! You will see plenty of elk hunters ... plenty.

From 413 east you are going to get into some good deer populations, but more deer hunters. Those 4xx breaks units see a lot of vehicle based hunting, but you would be surprised what you can find if you go for a walk... the country is bigger than it looks on GE for sure.

Thanks alot I appreciate it. Ya I am not afraid to go for a walk:)!! We were actually thinking about buying elk/deer combo tags and seeing if we could smoke one of each!! Where would you recommend I look at? I appreciate your help, if I have any other questions it might drop you an email if you are ok with that? I was also looking at 204.

Thanks,
Tony
