View Full Version : Input on Wyoming elk unit 49

I hunted unit 49 in 2006, I was very fortunate to harvest a beautiful 6x6. Having built up 4 points going into this years NR draw I anticipated a good shot at drawing again. The results rolled in and I did not draw. Upon looking into the draw odds I see the quota was reduced from 15 in 2011 to 7 in 2012. I called DOW to inquire why the reduction and really got no answer. I know the area I hunt around Tensleep didn't see an extreme winter, any ideas why quotas got cut in half. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

The 2010-2011 winter was bad in the Big Horns, I was up there in the middle of June last summer and they still had roads closed due to the snow being too deep. With the snow being that deep that late my guess is that they did not have a high calf survival rate and probably had excessive winter kill.

+1 on bad winter in 2010-2011.
I ran a trail run on east end of BH in June. The courses were altered due to too much snow. (Porcupine Ridge Ranger Station had 60-70" yet around June 20th!)
Here are some pics from that trip.299029912992
