View Full Version : Best MT unit for DIY spot and stalk bear hunt?

From what I've read it seems like the area on either side of the MT-ID border is the best general area to do a DIY spot and stalk bear hunt. I'm thinking about setting up a DIY trip next spring.
On the MT side I think the best units #s are in the low 100s with maybe 106 being best. Any thoughts?

Don't seem right for an ol man from Arkansas to give advice about spot and stalk bear hunting in Montana. The one place I know is around Noxon. Closed logging roads in any direction will work for spot and stalk bear. If you go north you will be in griz country. Wolves are all around. You do not want to shoot a griz, the penalitys are so severe. Some of the open roads would be my first choice since game retrival would be easy. First place is just beyond the turn off to Noxon going toward the east is a road to the left. That is where I would start, after you park walk up the left side of the stream. Look at a map when you reach the end of the hike it is not far over the ridge to another good spot and it has a road/trail coming in from that side.
There is a bar in the middle of town you should visit just to see the decor. Good luck where ever you decide.

Wow, that was much more specific than I requested, just looking for which unit to concentrate on. Thanks for the help.
A good friend is going up to Canada in Sept. to shoot a black bear over bait that a guide has set out but I passed on that. It just doesn't seem sporting - DIY spot and stalk for me!
