View Full Version : Anybody ever hunted X12 lately ?

Haven't been on the Forum for quite some time.
My son and I drew X12 tags this year. I've hunted X9B a few times and X10 twice and X9A once in 2006.
Have never been able to draw X12 until now. Been in the zone many times driving though, etc. but not hunted it.
I had a friend that had hunted it a few times a long time ago but all I remember him mentioning was Bodie Hills.
The season being Sept.15th to Oct. 8th like X9B and X9A I'm sure most bigger bucks will be up high or still in Nv. !
Any places to start would be more than appreciated. I have all maps that cover X12 already.
Thanks

I have never hunted x12 myself but my friend killed a buck down there aroud Bodie Hills a few years ago. Also check out the website for Kens Sporting Goods. They have hunting photos for the last two years and most of the photos have the general location of the kill. Good luck!

I have hunted X9A quite a few times and have a tag for this year, but I have a cousin that lives in X-12. He's a deer hunter but rarely draws a tag for his home turf. I can give him a call and see what I can find out for you. I'm hitting some new places in X9A this year, maybe we could even trade some info if you have any regarding X9A. Let me do some digging and I'll shoot you a PM

Killed a nice 3x3 in the Bodie Hills a few years ago. Right now, im thinkin elevation and water would be a recipe for success. Theres always deer in the hills. When you get weather at the higher elevations, the migratory animals will start moving in. Get away from the roads too, as the road hunting gets pretty bad.

Hey Boss,
I was thinking elevation also. Opening on Sept. 15 ...Closes Oct. 8th. I froze my butt off in X9A 2006 at 8500 ft.on a Sept. opener. Saw only a few does. I moved down to around 6000 ft. next morning and saw lots of deer. Funny thing though, the last weekend of season we went with friends to stay a Convict Lake . I snuck out that Sun. morning early and drove to the spot I hunted opening morning about the lake. Shot a small buck . Two days later I was on my way to Az. fro an achery elk hunt. Last day buck. Do you think they would get any or even enough weather during those season dates to trigger any migration ? I haven't seen them migrate that early off Coyote in X9B into the Goodale unit. I guess it's possible though. I was going to check out the Bodie Hills area. I figured it would be popular. Had a friend that was a State park Ranger there that shot a few back when it was a lot easeir to draw.

Sounds good NoMore,
I have hunted a few places in X9A. Have notes still from a friend who used to guide and pack in X9B and X9A.
Might be some helpful info.
Thanks !

I shot a buck in x-12 last year. It's a big zone with room to roam. Start high up on the west side, or in the sage on the east side. Use your optics until you're sure no deer are in sight, then move to another spot and continue scoping.

The closer to the road you are, the more crowded it's gonna be.

He's just a 2x2, but I was on crutches and it was not the time to be too picky. He tasted great, lol.

He looks just like the buck I shot above Convict Lake in X9A 2006.

That zone, X12 has been on my pick list for a few years now. 18+ years before the point system I used to get drawn every year. No draw though for more for more than a few seasons. I've hunted the wilderness country out of Little Antelope Pack Station. I've heard the hunting is pretty good in the hills behind Ken's Sporting Goods towards Nevada or the Bodie Hills as well out of Bridgeport and it has good access too. I kind of like hunting higher in the Alpine country though more than the lower hills just as preference though.

Id hunt the western edge of the Bodie Hills. Theres many draws to pick over, and crowding should not be a problem if you get away from the roads. I wish I had just one pic of my buck, its pretty funny, I hit him right between the eyes! Makes for an ugly pic anyways. We didnt see many deer in the first few days where we scouted them, so we concentrated on the "wet" draws, and did some pushes in the evening. Turned out to be the secret, we killed 4 bucks for 6 guys. My brother missed a nice 3x4 at 350 yards, but connected on his buddy at 400 with his 300 winmag. Nice shootin'. Good luck in x12, dont forget the spotting scop[e for the evening, it saved some leather.

Thanks Keven and Boss,
You guys are getting me excited to go already. I'm going to try to hunt the first few days and if have to hunt the last few.
Keven, I haven't talked to you for over a year either ! From what I've heard and now read, Bodie Hills seems to be a popular spot.
I like must don't like crowds but after opening weekend it seems to thin out.
Just thought of another question. Any recommondations on where to camp or stay ? I read about a lot of campgrounds in the area.
Might even find a cheaper hotel in Bridgeport or Lee Vining.
Thanks eveyone .

Many of the official campgrounds that you find on a map will be full if you drive over the evening before opening day. There's a lesser known spot just east of Sonora Pass on 108. On the turn off for the dirt road that goes above the Marine base. But it's a ways away from Bodie, if that's where you're gonna hunt.

My advice would be to rely less on luck and control your own fate by hiking AWAY from the roads. Especially early in the year when the weather doesn't have the deer moving. If you can hike in and camp a few miles away from a road, even better.

Good luck out there, and be sure to post some pictures of your success!

Ha ha, no. The 7mm mag did the trick! He was quartering away at about 70 yards and I him in the lungs. After seeing nothuing but fawns and does all opening day, his antlers looked 10 feet tall. He's no trophy, but I was elated for sure. An injury that limits what you can do, can really damper your expectations.

Thanks NID ! I have some good info to go one from all these post. Funny how close X9A,X9B and X10 are that I've hunted but nervous about X12 that I haven't. My son and a friend that is old and can't do the hiking drew with me. It's the older guy I'm worrying about. I don't want it to cramp my hunting style but I have to keep an eye on him if you know what I mean...My son is 20 yrs old so no worries there. I now have a lot of map reading to do !

I just thought maybe he wasn't dead when you hobbled up to him and gave him a crutch to the head a few times. :D

I've heard the Bodie hills is a good spot. A friend of mine said they went with a guide/outfitter that took them out in the Bodie hills to get their bucks. It is a good spot from what I've heard. One of my friends has some good deer hunting memories out by the high altitude Marine base that Never in Doubt mentions too. He was stationed out there for several years.

Awesome getting a tag in X12 HuntWYODon. I hope you will be able to get out an scout some before the season opens and you have a fun and successful hunt.

If you travel north, thru the town of Bodie, theres a nice primitive campsite about 5 miles in. We camped there with tents for a week, 6 guys. Bring plenty of water, and an easy up, as shade is sparse. No campfires unless forest service raises the threat. Just like any other hunt for big game, pray for weather! Hunted with a fella many years ago, who would bail out at the signs of "bad" weather, therefore, we dont hunt with him anymore. Used to drive dad crazy! Anyhow yes, theres campgrounds and hotels available, but primitive sites are also plentiful.]

Kevin,
I won't be able to scout prior to the season. Can't afford it. It's about 350 miles just to Bishop for me. I'm taking off two days before the season. Probably one day to find a place to camp and maybe scout and next day to scout. i'll go back the last few days if I don't kill something on first trip. Probably the best tag I've ever drawn in Ca.. Had X9A tag in 2006 but never found a decent buck. Shot a forkie last day of season.

I'd prefere to camp at a primitive spot anyways. I'll trailer my Razor with me to get around. I'm assuming X12 is like x9B and X9A with no OHV restrictions unlike So. Cal. mtns. ... I'm figuring the first day will be devoted to finding a place to pitch it !
Thanks for the info all of you guys !

I Had just gave my manager my vacation dates for the first few days of X12 and last few plus Wy. 125 tag dates in Nov.
about half hour later a lady from Ca. F&G calls and wants to know I want the antelope tag that I was the first alternate for...
I said I don't believe this. Told her I had got drawn for X12 and a good tag in Wy. and now this. Told her it was the first time in 30 yrs. I haven't hunted in Ut. and thank God I didn't apply for a tag. She was laughing the whole time and I said funny for you ! Told her it wasn't a matter of vacation time, it's a matter of affording all the trips. She said I didn't to give her an answer until Mon. and you don't loose you points. Yeah, you just won't ever draw again ! I told her if it was a tule elk tag I would't hesitate. Cr@p ! It's all or nothing. Told my mangager and he said don't worry about back filling for me to take the time if i wanted. I told him also it's the ching ching not the time. Man, that's like driving all the way to Wy. to the north part of state. Did pts. for loper for 4 yrs. in a row then applied this yr. and whamo ! At least I'll keep my max pts. if I don't accept.

Another thing I didn't think of is that the new hospital opens on the 19th. I take care of all phone work at 2 hospitals and 12 of their other bldgs. in 3 cities for a Hospital system. The new hospital is all Cisco so I have nothing to do with it except interfacing with it. All other buildings are NEC. It shouldn't be any big deal. The guy who covers for me can handle any problems that might come up. Already to go on my end.

I live in Bishop and have a X12 tag as well. I have hunted it, but not lately. I will be scouting most every weekend before the opener.

I am looking for something over 25". If I find something else I would be willing to help you fill you tag. What are you looking for? I will be camping at the Willow Springs Campground for a week starting on Sept. 12th or 13th. I will likely be backpacking in unless I find something close.

Hey Sierra,
I just drove up from Bishop all the way over 395 Thur. heading above Susanville for my Big Valley antelope hunt.
Had some nice cool weather with some rain. Hot as hell in Bishop when I stopped. Went to Ford Dealer there to see if it was my fuel pump or turbo that was going out. They couldn't look at it. Mechanic thought fuel pump or injectors. I found out latter myself it was the turbo. No power all the way up. Went back the 5 fwy and the Grapevine in 3rd gear was a joy. I took some pics of some bucks outside of Bridgeport. Not real big. I'm not familiar with that camp ground. I know where Bodie Hills are and a few other places. Have hunted X9B, X9A and X10 a few times but never X12. I'll be getting up there on the 13th. I'm not looking for the biggest buck on the mtn. but if it stepped out I take him. I usaully see what I see the first few days. I know the big ones will become scarce after a day or two. My son and an older gentleman will be with me . The older guy won't be hiking . My son and I will do what it takes. I'd like to see both get any buck before I worry about me. I can out climb and hike my son and he's 20 yrs old.I had a friend that was a park ranger yrs. ago Bodie. He had hunted X12 many times. He always swore by Bodie Hills. I got on Ken's Sporting Goods site and checked out last years bucks. A few nice ones. I'll PM you and give you some info.

I have to cancel my scouting trip for this weekend. My Yellow Lab had to go to the vet and she is needs to stay inside for a few days.

Bodie mountain and Potato Peak have always been decent spots. I have also killed deer in Aurora Canyon. You get to it by turning east after leaving Bridgeport heading toward Nevada. It is clear on the maps. if you are coming from So. Cal there is no reason to go that far. There is a ton of country in X12. I hope to give you better info after I get back up there.

Nowadays you can only drive through the Bodie when they are open. And, the whole basin where the Bodie is located is a no shooting area.

PM me any time. I don't check this forum often.
