I drew a buck tag here. Anyone ever hunted in this unit or have knowledge of the current unit status. Will start scouting in August but I don't know much about the unit, other than my paper research.

Check with odfw in burns/hines. They're real helpful. Also stop in and get access maps. Odfw bought un hunting rights on a pile of ranch ground

Sounds good. Have you much experience in the Steens and or know about the current herd status/trophy trend?

Been several years since i have hunted it but used to go all the time in the hayday of the steens mt. I have taken a few 165-175" class deer from there. My largest was around 1990 or so a 185" 4x5 really trophy deer used to inhabbit those mt's! The jeans are still there to a point. last time i hunted was around 12 years ago. And we couldn't even find a mature buck... But two years ago a freind had a tag and the got some good weather(snowed a tad) he came back on the 4th day with a nice heavy horned 25" wide inside 5x5 buck. He was seeing decent deer every day.

Try calling the BLM Office in Hines, I have a buddy that works that area, one of the Range Cons might have some good info.

I drew the rifle tag and will be packing into the wilderness area portion of the unit (no mv's allowed portion).

Well thats encouraging! Most the info I have received is like your opening statement. That the unit was HOT back in the day, but way, way down at this time.
Was your friend hunting from the truck, or packed into the wilderness, non motorized areas? I am stoked to hear that he was seeing good deer every day.
Thanks for the info man. I appreciate it!
