I drew a Zone X-10 tag in California for the regular (not late) season. Any information on that area would be appreciated. It is adjacent to Hwy 395, and extends west to the Kern River. Mostly in wilderness areas. I had this posted in the Mule Deer Forum, but it is getting lost over there. Thanks.

Yeah, needs to be in Ca. section. I already told you what I know. Hopefully somebody else will pipe in. All I know is it's going to be hot dammit ! I hate hot weather ! Especially for hunting .

Hey Sawfish, I don't know how much money you want to spend, but there is a Pack Station you can rent located in Kennedy Meadows. I believe they charge approximately $1,200.00 per person. They will pack you and your gear into the Olancha Peak area, which is loaded with big bucks. They will pick you up a week later and check on you during the week. I also found out the jeep road leading into Monache Mountain is open. I used to shoot all my deer on and around Monache Mountain. Just be sure and take a 4-wheel drive in there with a set of chains in case it snows. Good Luck.

Thanks bigshot. I have been getting the Jeep ready, and have packed two sets of chains so I can chain up all four if necessary. I was wondering if any of the packers would still be working in October. You answered my question.

Hey Saw,
It snowed the last couple of days of season there on Oct. 8 and 9th. Got first early storm of the year. All the Sierra X zones got up to a foot at higher elivations. The areas bigshot mentioned used to be great 20 yrs ago when I hunted X10 a few times. Last time I hunted there was 13 yrs ago. Before that they used to call Kennedy Meadows the deer factory ???
Bigshot,
When was the last time you hunted X10 ?

Last time I hunted X10 was about 25 years ago, but I have friends that have hunted it the early and late season the past few years. They also told me about the Pack Station horses they rented, guess if you have money its the way to go.

That's why its always important to scout before the season every year no matter how long you've been hunting an area. Time changes things, year to year. My brother and I will be putting in for X10 as our second choice next year. I always put in for G6 as my first choice which is the unit next to X10, and a late season hunt.

There is a particular G zone I always put in for first choce as well. Some of those G zones take many many years to draw!

And sometimes you just don't live long enough to outlast everyone else with max points. I am planning a CA Elk hunt for my 85th Birthday (only 20 more years). That will be right after my Goodale deer tag. (LOL)

Don't say that Sawfish ! Got my bighorn and antelope. Want a dang tule elk tag now ! have max pts. Maybe 10 yrs. okay ? Took me 13 for antelope and 10 of it was with max pts. I may have told you this but don't hate me for it :) I drew my bighorn tag in 2002 , the first year they were going to give points and 3 times as many people put in. Sometimes the hunt God's have to smile on you. Or is it the F&G God's ??? I'm ready for X12. Leaving 9/13. Hope my luck holds out . Sawfish , aren't you shooting Lionfish yet ?
That was pretty neat looking buck bigshot.

I have a few points, maybe even "I" will get luckey someday? or even worse I'll probley end up drawing all my premium tags in the same year! I would have to quit my job! Because who knows how long I'd have to wait to draw them tags again.

Are you insinuating I was lucky this year ? LOL ! I've done that a few times in my life. It's never been a problem of vacation time at work. It's been the $$$ for the out of state trips. Especially the last few yrs. with the price of fuel. Diesel fuel in particular. I think this yr. was one of them with Ca. antelope tag, X12 deer tag and Wy. 125 deer tag. So glad I didn't draw Az. and applied for the firsst time for points only in Ut. in 30 yrs. . I'd of been screwed !

Okay-back from Jamaica and the Lionfish Safari. Not as many of the pesky little critters as last time. The locals have been doing a good job keeping them thinned out since they found out Lionfish taste like grouper! We avoided the worst of Hurricane Isaac, and were able to get in some serious diving after Monday (8/27). Water was very murky and pretty rough until then. Had a very attractive young lady from Chicago diving with us named "Jen". We were all sorry when she left.

Desk piled at the office (no surprise), but I will be getting up to X-10 for some pre-season scouting before the opener. Have to dig out the pistols and do a little range checking. Don, if you are over your "Senior Moment", do you know when you are going up to X-12?

HuntWYODon
09-06-2012, 03:32 PM
Hey Saw !
Hope you had fun ! Hope you didn't poke Jen with your spear... :) What Senior moment are you referring to ? I don't remember anything ... Leaving the 13th. Camping at Buckeye. Hunting Buckeye and Bodie Hills. Hooked up with a great guy on here called Sierra Intruder. He lives in Bishop. He aslo has an X12 tag and has been doing a lot of scouting. The friend I met named Mike who shot the big Lope in the Big Valley unit where I was has an X9B tag. He and a friend are taking their horses in at Sawmill Canyon. We might meet down in Bishop one night for beer and steak. You won't be far away. I have your cell # . Think you have mine. If it happens, I can call you to see what's up and if you can make it. My son and friend have Verizon if AT&T doesn't work. I'll PM you their numbers in case mine doesn't. Welcome back !
I think NoMoOldNo7 will be hunting in X9A. We talked about some places we knew.
Maybe he will post in.

X-10A does not open until the last Saturday in September, but I will check with you when I get up there to scout around. Was able to spear four Lionfish. No pics. of them on the spear. Maybe I can post a picture of one of the survivors.

I see it opens on the 29th. Now your scouting makes sense to me...:)

Saw,
Too bad you didn't get to pre scout but I never get to either unless it's local and even then they are always in the same areas. Costly these days to go long distance's to scout. It's not a lot of fun to go by yourself sometimes. Too bad you have to. Wish I could go with you. You could probably use another mule...

Well, some people never learn. After the fiasco hunt in X-10 last year, and doing my damnedest to keep away from the mountain bikers, I swore that I would never hunt there again. Well, buyers are liars, as they say. Put in for G38, which is late season X-10 as a second choice. Figured that a mediocre area that I know something about beats a good area that I know nothing about. We will see. I may have a better chance with the season being a month later this time around. After thinking about this through the winter, I just have a hard time believing there are no (mentally deficient) bucks in this area.

Thanks, Bigshot. It will be a challenge to get one close enough to kill with a handgun! Seems like everyone thinks you have to shoot them at 500+ yards!

I did not get drawn for X-10 last year. Another forum member did, and my recollection is that he did not see a buck. Colorado Cowboy knows the name of the packer you are looking for.

Found this on another thread (posted by Chief Gobbler) I can also vouch for Kennedy Meadows Pack Station and Owner Matt Bloom. I have done many day trips and many friends have used him for hunting trips. His brother Josh Bloom who operates Aspen Meadow Pack Station ( I have used him for packing into the Emigrant Wilderness for many years as they are closer to our hunting area). Both are great people with first class equipment and stock

I pulled X-10 last year, saw several already dead deer and saw 1 live buck as I was heading home for the last time...almost hit him with my truck. Onne guy got a deer, but had to leave it on the mountain overnight. All he got from that was the head, a bear ate the rest of it.

From the guys that I talked to, the majority of the deer are up high, i.e., 2,000+ft climb and 3+ miles in, it's wilderness area, so you either pack in, ride a horse(s) or find somebody to pack you in.

It's also very crowded around Monache.

Another forum member also went up to Monache last year and had somebody take a shot over his head at a deer he was tracking.

There's a packer that works at the very northern end of X-10, called Horseshoe Meadow, but you're looking at a minimum of $500 per horse per day for them, unless you can work some kind of deal with them. I forget the name of the packer, but it's easy to look up, they're out of Lone Pine.

The trailhead is at 9,200 feet, the lowest pass getting out of the trailhead is 10,400ft, again, all wilderness area.

I went up there first last year, according talking to a packer there, there are some nice bucks, but it's tough hiking (at least it was with 100+lbs of kit and no acclimation to the altitude).

I didn't get a chance to do much scouting before hand and the problem I found is that you have to get up over one of the passes and down into the next meadow or out on to a ridgeline. Because of all the trees, you have to get a good distance back in order to see anything, and if you find one, you have to go back up to get him. If you get one, you're looking at several trips over the pass and back to get him and your gear out.

Certainly not impossible, but requires a good bit of work and/or outside assistance.

I'd like to go up again, but I would want to see if I could work a deal with the packer to haul food and water in for me so that I could go in with over a week's worth and set up a base camp to work out of.

According to the 2014 Big Game Digest, there were no second choice X-10 tags last year. The Digest shows an 8.5% success rate. There were 400 tags issued and 17 bucks killed. My calculator calls that 4.25%. Not good enough for my first pick. Check the numbers before you apply!
