Hey guys new to eastman's forum. I'm a colorado resident lookin to spend my 6 deer pref points on 2013 3rd or 4th season. Would that be too many, or not enough points for unit 55 deer? I lived in gunnison for 1year did my freshman year at western state 2009. Saw a lot of really nice bucks while coyote hunting durin 2nd and 3rd rifle seasons. This was the year after the winter kill of 08, still a good number of nice bucks in the area. Has anyone tried or successfully drawn 3rd/4th season rifle buck tag for 55? How many points did it take? Which year? Is 6 points too many? Any info on your hunt or experience would be greatly appreciated! -heath

Drhorsepower, I got your pm, that website was very helpful. As for a unit 55 archery hunt, I didnt get up into the high country during early season. But I do know they have an abundance of animals that never get seen during open season because they hang out in rough, rugged, remote country and the majority of rifle hunters stay near roads. But i'm assuming ifu like to get back into some wilderness u will be able to hunt in a natural setting with little pressure, and get chances at some trophy animals

I hunted there this year second rifle, a lot of the older bucks where still up high right at timberline. I killed a decent 4x4 on the third day at 12,000' - my first mountain muley, it was a great experience, wouldn't trade it, but once a little snow fell in the high country the bigger deer started to move - there were some nice ones, saw a stud down in the sage brush country after a little snow fell in the high country a few days later. From what I saw the rest of the season while I was hunting elk (unsuccessfully) there are some really good deer in the unit.

I've hunted or helped on four deer hunts in Unit 55 (2005 3rd season, 2006 4th season, 2010 3rd season, and 2011 3rd season). On the 2005 hunt I missed a solid 180 buck. On the 2006 hunt I saw the largest straight typical I've ever seen (around 210). The top end bucks really got decimated in the hard winter a few years ago.
As of 2011, it was hard to find a buck over 160. By next year (2013) these bucks will have two more years on them so you may start seeing a few solid bucks.
I'm at 7 points. If I were a resident, I'd hold off for a year or two, because it's only gonna get better, barring a hard winter. I don't believe you have the point creep problems that most of us do as non-residents. If I were a resident, I'd like to draw and hunt that unit in it's prime. There are some killer genetics in the Gunnison basin.
