Some buddies and I have 4 late cow tags in January in N Idaho. We have to be within a mile of cultivated fields.
I have not hunted up there before, any advice?

A mile is a long way in that country. Buy a National Forest service map, as they show general land ownerships. Clearwater National Forest Map, I think it is. They will show what is private, what is National Forest, and what is Bennett Lumber and what is Potlatch Lumber land. Key in on where the lumber company lands (which you can hunt) border private land. Mark those likely spots on the map, and then double check on Google Maps/Google Earth to ensure the private land is a cultivated field. There's lots of those opportunities. You can get in on logging roads and then hunt back towards the fields. It may take some time covering ground until you find real fresh sign. But there's a lot of elk on the Palouse. That's the route I would go if I didn't know a land owner.
