View Full Version : How the wyoming draw works?

I just want to verify that I understand the Wyoming draw process correctly.
I will have a party of 4, all with 1PP, for an average of 1PP each.
We will pick our first choice, and our 1PP average will be applied to that draw chance.
If we dont draw our first choice, our PPs dont count for 2nd and 3rd choices?
Is that a correct statement?
So the key if we want to hunt bucks this fall is to have 2nd and 3rd choice units with 100% draw for 0PP?
We are looking for good public land hunting oppurtunities. Just representative bucks of the species, not monsters. This is our first western hunting trip. For our 2nd and 3rd choices we are considering 25, 16, 17, 22, 23, 30 and 31.
Can anybody provide some information about the public hunting oppurtunites in those units?
You are correct on the draw process, the areas you list for 2nd. and 3rd. choices are all listed as difficult public access.

If you are willing and able to pay for the special tag, you will be able to draw a whole lot more units on that second choice.

I do realize that the units I listed are marked as difficult public access.
Does anybody have good recomendations for 2nd and 3rd choice units with GOOD public access and bucks of any size?
Not opposed to a small trespass fee if its available on private land. Not really interested in the special tag prices or higher trespass fees. Trying to make this first trip as cost effective as possible.

"difficult public access" is way over rated. Look at the BLM in the unit and see if there is enough for you. 2nd choice on regular money will put you in btm tier units, 10-12" bucks so you don't need 50 sections to find a monster.
16-17, 22-23 have enough blm that with a map chip you could get around and kill something. 31 you'll be on hatsix hma.
I wouldn't hunt 30. If you don't draw an HMA your stuck.
The internet has educated everybody to the 2nd choice units and how to get them. The result is slimmer pickins every year.

My dad and I took our first trip to wy last fall and hunted 30 and 31 mid way through season. The tags were leftover because we dindn't draw. We saw plenty of antelope but the vast majority were on private land. Three full days of hunting state land yielded two small bucks and one doe. It was frustrating to see antelope but not being able to hunt them. My very limited experience leads me to want to gain a few points or hunt does on better areas.

I hunted 30 my first year and that hma is now closed. I saw one herd outside the hma and it was off limits. i now only hunt does and have no trouble filling the limit but I spend quite a bit of time looking at odds, leftovers, and units.

My experience is similair. It's very frustrating being confined to a square mile here and there when there's antelope everywhere else you look but can't hunt. I think the key to the areas you mentioned is to skip the first week.
