View Full Version : How long to draw tag in Nevada?

I bought points for deer and antelope in Nevada this year. I'm not going to put in for a tag until 2016. I'm just curious how long it has taken other non-residents to draw some of the better northern units? Nevada's draw system is kind of weird. What do expect from the casino state. Any input would be great. Even funny sarcastic comments. Thanks

Im thinking it takes more then 4 years since I have I have been putting in that long and not drawn anything yet. There are stats on the NV web site on how many points it generally takes to draw but that doesnt always work either since I didnt draw a tag this year that everyone with 3 points drew last year. All we can do is keep paying app fees and buying a NR license every year and hope someday we get lucky!

I think this qualifies as a funny sarcastic comment, although I you nailed it on the sheep and goat.

Ricochet, do you have specific units that your building points for.........Archery, muzzleloader, rifle?

I'm a non-resident from Oregon. I drew desert sheep in 2002 with max points. I drew elk in 2006 with over 10 points I recall. I drew antelope in 2010 with 14 points, and I have 21 points for deer and still have not drawn, but I am pretty picky on the unit I draw for deer. I currently have 19 points for California bighorn and still have awful draw odds.

NV is the only state I apply in that will probably take more then 4 or 5 points to draw other then my home state. I try to pick units I can draw every 3 to 5 years in other states I apply in. I call NV my dream state. I dont mind having 1 long shot state in the mix but I want to hunt the others every few years.

(Knock on wood) I should draw something every year. Or I plan on it!

IKIC nailed it though.

I would be rifle hunting. For deer I have been looking at early or late(61-64, 66-68) and for antelope (61, 62, 64, 71, 71). But I'm always doing research and looking for new oppurtunities.

The late deer hunts have alot steeper drawing odds then the early hunts. I applied for all late hunts this year. I expect to be hunting in WY in early Oct so I wouldnt have been able to hunt an early season this year. The nice thing about the NV draw system is you always have some chance to draw.

What he said. Probably more on deer and antelope for a decent unit IMO though.

I drew an antelope rifle tag last year with 6pts. And I drew a late rifle deer tag this year with 7pts.

I'd really like to hunt the sage and aspen valleys of the Independence range in Northeast Nevada or the Pinion covered Mountains in Eastern Nevada. The draw odds are pretty poor, 4-5 percent but if I get in the Guides draw it will go up and I'll have close to a 50 percent chance to draw. I have an aquaintance who guides that area in Nevada, and I just think I need to budget a hunt there next. I've been putting it off way to long. Hearing and seeing the pictures of those Nevada mule deer has me itching to hunt there.

Thanks guys for the responses. That gives me an idea at what I'm looking at for time frames. Good luck to who drew this year. Does anybody have pictures of there success in Nevada? Thanks again.

Nevada is a gambling state. You can draw with zero points or it take forever. I've got 8 points for deer and I put down 5 choices every draw. Yeah, they're good hunts but I've got a lot invested now. You can draw the Rubies every year or every other year but I just can't see using all my points for this unit. On the other hand I drew a California Bighorn tag with only two points (I had 17 for Desert Bighorn). Go figure...

Just remember that its luck of the draw. I had settled in to a long wait to be able to hunt some of the better units even being a resident , I got Lucky and drew 194- 196 late archery deer with 2 points and bull elk muzzle loader 075 during the rut with only 5.
Its about your choices and the gamble.

There are some giants in 194-196. Right across the highway from me. I know a guy that I am friends with that videos that unit. Can't wait to go down and see the video of the big bucks.
