We found one side of a 220 Palmated mule deer and hunted the other one. We walked down hill about one quarter mile then decided to go back and find the other side. We did find the other one and both had landed in a shade so they are not bleached. I can draw a tag for the unit so as my friend says Gorman is going to hunt him until one of them is dead. This will have to be a backpack hunt at age 72. My plan is 3rd season rifle.
Am I losing my mind?

Gorman, I think you can do it! However, I'm wondering how many points are you going to need to draw that tag? How about showing us a picture of that huge shed?

I will try to get a picture up. Cool thing is, I don't need any points to draw. How cool is that?

You could paddle a boat with those! I will hunt until I die! That's what keeps you young & going! My uncle is 75 still climbs tree stands & shoots whitetails with his bow. I stopped by his house the other day & he cut a rick of wood that morning. He was splitting it with a maul. I made him let me finish it! Good luck, start patterning him & get him!

If those are mule deer, then they are weird, they look perfectly normal for a young bull moose. I vote moose.

No known moose where they were found, however one came by the house on Bear Creek. I am going to do more research, like game and fish. Going to get more Google help too. I would never expect to find moose where these were found. T thought it was deer so I had given him the name,"Waterfall Buck".

I'm going with moose, too. Where I grew up there wasn't supposed to be a moose for 150 miles, but every other year or so a young bull would get spotted.

Moose have been extending their range here in Colorado for quite awhile now...especially in the SW part of the state. I've seen them here in our area (Between Cortez & Durango) several times. No established population yet, just seem to be "cruisin around". Wouldn't surprise me to see some for good here in the future.

Those sheds sure look like moose to me, but I'm no expert. I've shot a couple in Canada, a cow and a bull. Hard to tell from pictures.

Those are moose sheds, no doubt. I've found moose sheds in areas where they aren't typically found. For instance, I found a paddle in NW Colorado and the next year I found a paddle from the same bull 50 miles north in Wyoming.

AnthonyVR
12-09-2013, 10:36 AM
Even if those moose paddles actually belonged to a muley, 220" is quite the exaggeration... by any stretch of the imagination.

xtreme
12-09-2013, 06:12 PM
AnthonyVR the sheds were measured by the taxidermist at 220. A guide guessed 240, they are sheds so I know its not perfect. I do believe 220 is close

Bitterroot Bulls
12-09-2013, 06:20 PM
xtreme,

I think the taxi was taking you for a ride (pun intended). Any taxidermist worth his salt knew right away those were moose sheds, and they don't score near 220 as mule deer or especially as moose.

HiMtnHnter
12-10-2013, 07:50 AM
Scored as a mule deer, they probably would score around 220 due in large part to the inside spread. I have found moose sheds that look just like that. In fact, I'd bet a dollar (I'm not a wealthy man) they were found in NW Colorado.

xtreme has a good point, here in Arkansas, we have just as many moose as we do mule deer. If it isn't a whitetail or a hog, we may have trouble identifying it.

Don't waste your time looking for those sheds, Don. I shot that buck 2 weeks ago. Gross scored 551, and netted an even 550.

I haven't taken pictures yet, as I'm still waiting for my new wide angle lens to arrive.

Congrats on the shed find extreme! If I found them where I hunted my first instinct would have been palmated mule deer too as I've never seen a moose where I hunt. In the end you got something way cooler not many people have a matching set of Moose sheds.

I vote mule deer here. I have video of this buck from 2012. He has put on some mass and miles since then as I took the video from which these images were cut from about 1000 miles to the north west in Idaho.

Okay, in all seriousness, this is probably a bull moose we are looking at. If it had eye gaurds like the one in my photos, then I would say muley. Good find!

Now you have me thinking about it again. I could never image a moose where these sheds were found, nothing but a few small cedar, a mountain side spring on a steep side. No way to see it except to be there, 1 1/2-2 miles from the end of a jeep trail. I doubt I will ever go there again. I hunted this country 40 years ago.
