My wife is a professional photographer and shoots the wild horses in the great divide basin every year. She keeps telling me about all the elk and antelope and deer she sees. Now the photos of elk and goats yes, some decent ones. Deer mostly does and fawns. Is it worth giving it a look for a general tag?

Hey there, this was a post from me not long ago, I think it may be able to help you:

Hey there, I am new to the forum and just figured I would start out with a little positive info/story. I hunted 82(deer) with a Region W tag as a NR this year which happened to be my first deer hunting trip in Wyoming. Man was it a great experience! I have to say that I come from California(I know I know please don't club me) and although many western states do a great job at managing (some better than others and California is obviously not one) Wyoming is holding their own. All of the information I was able to ascertain from the biologist/wardens/taxidermist etc. was very accurate and helpful. My dad and I ended up seeing close to 90 bucks and had an absolute blast in the 9 days and a good snow storm. I have been reading some posts on this forum and it is always interesting how hunters can have such different experiences yet be hunting the same hills. Obviously genetics, management practices, and a million other variables play into what makes a successful hunting area regardless of the species but I truly feel and based on experience that good old hunting hard/basic hunting tactics are the key to a successful hunt regardless of whether there are 200 bucks in the hills you are hunting or 1. I hope that I can learn from all of you guys on this forum but I also hope I may be able to help those in search of answers be more successful in the field. Headed to Idaho unit 30 for archery elk this year, cant wait already!!

Am in the same boat as others above, have been in W the last 2 seasons with limited success, drew it again this year, have been hunting primarly unit 82 looking to get away from the Orange Army and shoot a decent buck doesn't need to be a B&C record, again any advice would be appreciated

Hey aquahallic, I was thinking of applying for w next year, what does it look like for antelope there in 82. I think I may have points to draw antelope and then maybe region w for deer in the special draw as second choice. Maybe try to burn my deer points on 102, 101, 84, I don't know. I would like to kill two mammals with one stone. Anyways, Cheers.
Constructive input from anyone is always appreciated

Too draw lope in that area of deer 82 you will need max points. We drew north of there last year and drew nothing this year for lope with one point

I checked my points and I have 5. Next year six, so there is a chance that I could draw 53 on the special draw, maybe 59 or 112. Not 58 or 57 If Im reading it wrong, someone please tell me what Im missing

This year you could have drawn 53 or 112 in the special and 59 in the regular draw with 6 points. You would not have drawn 57 or 58.

Region W is a tough hunt. You'll see plenty of small bucks, but finding a good one will take a lot of hard work and sweat. Getting away from the Orange will also be tough. I hunted there in 2011 and there were hunters and ATV roads everywhere. I hunted very hard for five days and killed the buck in my profile picture. He was with another buck that was also a shooter. We filled all 6 tags that hunt with 2 of the bucks being nice. It was a fun hunt with a lot of small bucks seen. I personally saw 60+ little bucks(spikes, forkys, small 3x3's).

Some family went back up there last year to the same area. They saw 1/4 of the deer numbers we saw in 2011. They hunted hard for the whole season and no one filled a tag. Hopefully the area rebounds

Hey Ridn, what area of w were you in. It is a huge area. My original idea was to hunt in 82 near the CO border but that could be had on a general tag. I have points so I would prolly apply for 102 or 101 for deer, and then 112 for antelope. They are also bordered by highway 80 which is convenient coming from my direction.

102 is gonna take max points, and 101 you will have a shot at 1 less than max.
