No I have never said the score of this buck or posted pics of him on the forum. Thats why I chose him. He is an eastern MT buck from 2006!

Too late at night to judge accurately but I can't resist.... Tear me up MM

Main beams- 20+20= 40
Mass = 26"
Spread = 23.5"
Tines = 21+23.5= 44.5 "

Total = 134"

Beautiful buck that would be hard to pass. He looses score in many areas but he has the frame that many 160+ bucks carry. This is one of those bucks that novices see skylined and they call a 180...

I grew up in Wyoming and only have one buck better than this great deer.

He is an old buck, Probably the oldest and biggest bodied deer I ever killed. I actually passed him up the first time I saw him because he was only a 4x3, couldnt stop thinking about him the next 2 days, went back and found him 300 yards from where i left him the first time and got him:)

Im going to guess with a 140" gross. Thats a great trophy though really like that right side tine that thing is huge. That tine could be used as a hell of a weapon.

I guess now is when I have to admit I dont know his gross score. At the show I had him scored at they just write the net on the card you fill out when you bring them in and I didnt think to ask what his gross was. His net is 105 1/8.

He'd gross a lot more than the net as a typical because of the missing tine on the left side. That would cause a lot of deductions in the B&C system that they obviously used because of not being symetrical. If the SCI system was used, he'd be a lot higher. He's still a nice shooter buck unless you have a LQ tag in a big buck unit and wanted to wait a for a real big one.

man....nets are for fishing, total inches is all I care about. I could care less if it had 200 inches on one side and 1 inch on the other. Net scoring is like entering the deer in a beauty pageant.

Maybe for the books, but most people I talk to want to know the gross score.

I just hate it when someone brings me a big old mature 7 pt to score and when it only scores 108 they say I don't know what I'm doing. They don't understand that just because it has a lot of bone doesn't necessarily mean 150. The trophy is truly maturity. That's what ive noticed over the years but we all get caught up in numbers such as a high gross score.

I don't care to know net, I'll give the animal credit for everything it grew.

I agree nets are for fishing! I really didnt know much about score when I shot him and really didnt care. Still dont, I can field judge better now but it still comes down to if I like him I go try to get him! I killed him on block management on a general tag in eastern MT in the CMR area in 2006.

I hear ya. The quality of the deer is all in the eye of the beholder. The score is just a quick judgement tool when sharing a story and a way for friendly competition between some hunters (some may not be so friendly competition).

That is a good ol' buck and I would have felt the same way as you if I passed him up once. Good thing he was old and obese so he couldn't go far from where you first saw him. :p

LOL I wouldnt say he was slow or obese, he was just a BIG deer! He was starting to rut and had about 20 does and a few small bucks with him.

Block management- I'd shoot him for sure. Nice Deer!

He's a bigger buck than the "net" score tells. I agree with packmule in that they should give credit for every inch they grow. Gross score is the way to truly gauge a deer. He is the exact kind of deer that I search for every hunt I take out west. Big frame mature buck. Great deer MM!

Im going to measure him myself to practice and figure out his gross. Since I know his net I should be able to figure out how accurate I measured him.

Musket Man
03-25-2014, 08:40 PM
I measured him today and got 135 gross and 119 net. I think I measured pretty accurate and I was within 1/8 on my other deer that has been measured. Not sure how they came up with 105 on him?

In "MY" scoring book, deductions don't exist! Its called "bonus points or character".

Nice Buck - someday I hope to get one

I was close! I have seen some "questionable" measuring in the past. I actually have an antelope that was officially measured twice. I had an WGF certified measurer score him green and then a different guy scored after the drying period. He gained 1 and 3/8 after drying!? He is currently at the taxidermist- I'll put him on this summer as a score the buck contest again.

IMO this is another reason not to get too caught up in the score. Your buck is awesome and a shooter anywhere in my book.

I can understand measurements being off an inch or ever two, but 14 inches is quite a bit!

Jeez 135? I would have guessed better than that. Well he's a good looking buck I say.
