My Wyoming elk hunt:

2010 was my first time elk hunting. We went on a scouting trip in late July and also showed up a few days before season. It was far and away the best hunting trip I have ever been on. Here are some pics of our trips.

Looks like cool elk country. I would like to hear more. What general area (like what side of what state), how many elk you saw, any harvests or close calls, etc.

After years of planning and days of scouting opening day was finally here. That evening my partner was sick and had to stay closer to camp, so I headed in solo. I had planned to sit at the wallow that I had spotted the broken 6 at, but 45 minutes into the sit I had 2 other hunters show up. So off I went another mile in to get away from the pressure. It was getting late and there was no action going on so I gave out a cow call and had an immediate answer, then another and another. I wasn't sure if it was other hunters bugling or the real thing. Soon they were closing the distance to me almost like it was a race. I ran across the meadow to set up on the one that sounded like he was going to arrive first. I got to the hill in time to see tines coming over. I was expecting a raghorn because he had such a screachy sound compared to the other two, but more and more tines just kept coming. I knew right away that he was a shooter. I couldn't believe it, I had called in 3 bulls! I was waiting at full draw as he came down the hill. He stopped behind the pine tree and bugled at the other bull standing 100 yards behind me. It felt like forever waiting for him to step out from behind the tree, when he did his vitals covered all my pins. The arrow zipped right through and I could here the gurgling as he ran away and crashed on the other side of the hill. I was so excited that I ran over the hill to see him and he stood back up. I guessed him to be about 50 yards and released another arrow almost hitting him in the same spot as the first one. He dropped again and it was all over. When I walked over to him I couldn't believe how big they are compared to the whitetails I hunt.

Here is the hill he came over:

After a couple pictures I headed back to camp to meet up with my buddy. He had went out and tried hunting around camp, so he got back right after dark. When he walked into camp I told him "I am sorry, I know you are sick but we have some work ahead of us". After a little story telling and a quick bite to eat we headed back up the mountain. Once we got close we could hear one of the the other bulls still bugling in the area. He didn't want to leave and was still mad as hell. After some high fives we took some more pictures and got to work. Three different times while we were deboning my elk, the other one came in and would "bark" at us. It was a late night but we finally made it off the mountain with heavy packs. We came back in the next morning for the last load.

This is where the work begins:

We had to walk by a trail cam I had hung on the first wallow which made for a cool pic. Notice the time on the picture and we still had a mile to go to camp. The hike out was tough, for as sick as my buddy was he was still a hell of a packmule.

My buddy ended up hurting his knee. He gutted it out 6 more days of bowhunting on a torn miniscus, before it locked up on him. So with no choice we headed home and prepared for an October return. I got to repay him on the second day of gun season, with a bum knee he was able to take this bull almost 2 miles in from the trailhead. This time I was his packmule!

You should have sent your story and pics into Eastmans Mag. I bet they would have published that story. Those are some awesome elk and I'm sure that story would motivate some guys to try a first time elk hunt. Great job!
