It is some good country and there were some pretty big bucks that we saw too there. It's not that far from Billings either Jon Boy. One buck kept putting the escape sneak on and being solo I had a hard time figuring out how to get him. Guess those big bucks get big for a reason and have some good escape routes. One night we also saw a big whitetail buck in our headlights close to private land but on the Custer public side. Most guys we saw up there don't get far enough off the access roads. Just getting off the access roads a bit was a big key to seeing bucks.
I may I have to look into that Kevin. Havent made it down that way hunting yet. I hear yuh about those big bucks. I had the same thing happen to me 2 weekends in a row with a masher. I thought I had him for sure the second time but he straight vanished out of thin air. Never even saw him bounding off just vanished. Figured that would be hard to do in the middle of a fairly open burn, I was wrong about that.
Yes, in Custer where we were hunting is the same. Big burns from years back with timber stands. Most of those isolated timber held deer. They have their escapes planned well and can see you coming unless you plan the sneak well. Alas the couple times I tried I was busted and he did not come back and I never had time to find where he went. Fun place to hunt.
