I am in the process of planning an elk hunt for next season. I am thinking of either Idaho or Colorado but leaning toward Idaho. Can anyone recommend any general areas in either state that would be a decent place to go?

Sorry can't be of specific help, but pick up a wolf tag while you're in ID, only $30 or whatever.
My advice would be pick a state do some research and come back with specific questions.
Sapper, I'm kind of in the same boat. Never hunted out west, but really got the urge to do it. A friend and I started buying preference points last year. We're buying in Wyoming and Colorado. Just keep reading forums like this one, you will pick up a lot of infromation. If you haven't subscribed to one of the Eastman's magazines, it's worth in, in my opinon, to get access to the MRS section. I wouldn't take the info in there as gospel, but it is a good starting point in terms of figuring out specific units. Google Earth is a good resource too. I was interested in one unit in Colorado and called the local state police office, and they were very willing to talk with me. Anyways, good luck. We're planning antelope in Wyoming next year (too broke to go this year, lol) and Colorado for the year after that for (probably) muleys.
have you seen this?
I'd go to ID over CO.

I knew it was dry out there, but I hadn't seen that web site. Already started buying points in Co, though. Maybe we will put off CO for a few years in favor of somewhere else like ID or MT.
I'd look to Idaho if you can find an area that doesn't have bad wolf problems, there will probably be less orange army problems you'd experience in CO.
i sent you a pm
Thanks for all of the advice everyone. This will be a pack in bow hunt I hope next September. I was looking at the northern portion of the state but have been hearing that the wolves have done a number on the heard up there. Also, I will need to find a unit that I can use an OTC tag in.
Agreed, everyone don't hunt Colorado.... Its awful here, please pick a different state as you will hate it here.
Thanks,
