Elkgrunt what late season did you have?
I went bowhunting twice this year in a Dzone, and came across 8 small bucks that I could have easily shot with a rifle. One I accidently bumped out of a patch of gnarly pine bushes on top of a ridge at 10,000 feet. He stopped and looked back at 100 yards before running to the next county, lol. That's when I realized just how different bowhunting is. Out of range has a whole different meaning.
So I'm no Robin Hood with the bow, but it's really tempting to put in for an X-zone that I think I can get this year. I'm going to have to put in some time improving my technique. Especially my stalking. I've been reading the book by Dwight Shugh(?) and the one thing I've really been impressed by is how patient I need to be.(really good book by the way)
So the question is do I really want to use my points on a bowhunt, or is my bow something I have to pass the time while waiting for rifle season? I'm going to have to decide that for myself.
I did realize for the 1st time in D6 how few hunters there are during bow season. I had a huge area to myself both times I had my bow, that was swarming with rifle hunters on opening day of general season.
I drew A5 (X3A Archery in 2011) and then again last year in A6 (X3B Archery). My odds of getting drawn in the random drawing were about 1 in 30 but still, never would've happened for a rifle tag. I'm sold on Archery in the X zones. Pressure is relatively non-existent and the deer are less spooky, more apt to be seen in the open during the day. In 11' I scored on a nice, tall forky and then last year I got a wall-hanger (for my standards): a 5x4 who scored around 168 before deductions. Couldn't have been happier.
