Damn you stupid fires
All set to come up and do a 4 day backpack trek to scout out some archery elk areas...and now the town of South Fork is under evacuation and the road to where I want to go in burned up. Pretty sure this is about 100% no go now, planning to hike in july 4th and they won't have any of the fires close to under control by then.
Look for alternatives and heck the spanish peaks are on fire too.
Going to make for good habitat in a few years, but it sure sucks this 10 seconds.
So far today, the North Fork Fire (Unit 76) has burnt 108 sq. miles and it's barely had any containment to it at all. Doesn't look good as there are so many beetle killed trees in those areas for fuel and the weather isn't co-operating one bit; hot, dry and high winds. We have quite a few other fires burning here in Colorado too and summer has just started. We pray that the July monsoon rains arrive this year. If I had a tag for those areas, I'd turn it back in.
Update on the West Fork Fire today. Approximately 75,000 acres has been lost so far (6/24/13) and there is still zero containment. There are around 15 fires now burning in Colorado and sure to be more soon. It's going to be another bad summer. No rain in the southwest forecast.
