You shouldn't have any snake problems in October, and even if you do come across one they are good at letting you know they are there. I'm definitely not a fan of snakes either, and here in NV...
Depending on the weather, I have Crispi Idaho's for warmer weather and Crispi Wild's for colder temperature. Both extremely comfortable and with the right sock combo they can't be beat.

I believe they do somewhat "sport kill" when mama is trying to train her kittens for survival. I think then she will kill more than they can eat.
