Excellent first deer, especially with the stick and string! I hope I get one like that!

I'd love to tell you guys how I watched him for a week until he slipped up and I was able to put an incredible stalk on him. The truth is that my Dad and I were coming back to camp from elk hunting all day, and ran into 4 bucks at about 3:30. They were coming up the hill from the creek, and the first 3 heard us coming and scooted around us at about 50 yards, never slowing for a shot. The big boy was lagging about a minute behind them, so we were ready for him. He came right at us, and knew something wasn't right. We were crouched on open ground about 35 yards from him. I had drawn early, and after he eyed us for about a 1 1/2 minutes, he turned broadside and I released. Shaking from the strain, the shot was high and back, but quickly fatal. After a long track in the rain, we were able to claim my prize. We saw 6 bucks during our 9 day hunt, and mine was easily the biggest. My Dad also filmed a real nice 4-point with a sticker as it walked by us at 22 yards a couple days later. Unfortunately, he didn't have a tag. The most laughable part of the story though, is the fact that we were half lost for several hours before we ran into my deer. All my friends call me lucky, but I tell them luck is what happens when readiness meets opportunity. So I wish you all good luck, and many thanks for your encouraging comments.
Live to hunt, hunt to live.
