Looking for Oregon Sixes Unit Bow Season Advise

It is planning time again...my attention has gone to the Sixes area for an archery elk hunt. The courteous and helpful
biologist at the Charleston field office has offered up some advise. To increase my knowledge I'd ask if any fellow bow
hunters have experiences they'd wish to share? Any information on elk population densities, campgrounds near good
hunting areas and suggested maps to study...anything would be useful as I begin this study.
It's sure a plus to be able to fish the salmon runs in that area too.
Are there any outfitters that provide drop camps in this area?
Thanks in advance for all replies and suggestions. )))------->

Horrible unit for elk. Non to be found there, maybe try east of the Cascades.

It's private but accessible. Weyerhaeuser has a good chunk. You have to check in with them every morning. There's elk there. The rifle tags run about 50% kill success. I believe the nearest biologist is in Charleston. Give him a call. Talk with Weyerhaeuser and see if that's an access hassle you want to deal with. Steep thick ground with clearcuts. You may not find a giant but a Roosevelt none the less

There is only a little piece of weyerhaeuser in the sixes and nobody can hunt it. Beav906 you must be thinking of the tioga unit because you can hunt that during rifle and not archery. They close it down due to fire danger and for the employees to hunt.

Fetch: I live 1.5 hours away. Yes the success is great, but that is for people who have keys to the gates to get to the elk. I have been told it is very difficult to hunt as a public land hunter.

I know the ground well down there and a guy can find some ok elk hunting on the public lands. But for the most part the private is by far the best. If i had to travel any large amount i would not go for the public hunting accsess.
And unless the weather gets very wet i would put no hope into timber company lands. Even if the rain comes they still won't open thier lands for hunting during the week. You may get away with it, but things are not like they used to be down that way.
When the private is closed it is closed to all traffic foot, bike, ect. It's bad not being able to find elk but not even being able find a spot to look is worse imo!
