Great story!!! Congrats on the big ram!
AWESOME RAM! Thanks for posting.
Great ram! Got my 2012 Colorado Sheep & Goat brochure today. Will be turning in for my Desert Sheep permit. One thing you sheep hunters should know, this year for the first time I know of, nonresidents can apply for a Desert Sheep permit. Unit S56 has a NR tag. This unit is between Grand Junction and the Utah border.Great country and lots of animals. Residents get 4 tags, I am tenpted to apply for this area instead of S63/64 where I live. We get 2 tags in the area I want. Hope I get lucky. My neighbor got one there 3 years ago.

This was the first I saw of a NR tag. I called Colorado DOW and the guy I talked to said he too thought this was the first year. Maybe we both are wrong. The real encouraging thing to me is that it seems to me that the total Desert Sheep tags are increasing...which I guess means they are doing well. I see them every time I spend a little time in S63 & 64.

great ram congrats
I checked my last year's brochure just to be sure I wasn't putting my foot in my mouth, and there was definitely 1 NR tag in S56. A check over on the RMBS board showed that the guy who drew posted once on the site looking for info but nobody ever heard back from him. I thought I had seen a photo of the NR with a ram somewhere but maybe I was mistaken. But with a total of 5 tags available last year as well as this year the sheep in this unit must be doing very well, and that's where I'll be putting in for a tag this year. Interesting also is that a NR desert sheep tag costs a good bit less than a Rocky Mountain bighorn tag.
Three years ago my neighbor got drawn for the 63/64 tag. Got a real nice ram. I helped him pack it out. He is not a real big trophy hunter and wasn't going to have it mounted until he talked to a local taxidermist and found out how much the mount would be worth. He doesn't have it now, I heard he sold it to Cabelas. I know one thing, if I am lucky enough to get a tag and a Ram, it will be in my freezer and on my wall!
