    Montana Archery Elk

I do 95% my hunting with quality limited entry tag. I have devoted most of my hunting research to these limited entry hunts, and with the point systems, I have a pretty good idea when we will draw the tags we are applying for.

For the years that we won't likely draw one of the tags we have been saving point up for, I would like to begin to learn an area that has some quality general archery elk hunting. This could be in Idaho, Montana, or Colorado.

I am thinking Montana may be one of our best bets with a great chance to draw a combo tag. Does anyone have any general areas to be looking at in Montana. I am at the very beginning of my research. I am not looking at a hard core area. My wife would be bowhunting with me, so we are mainly looking for day hunts based out of our camper. I love the SW part of the state around the Big Hole River and the Madison River, though I am not at all tied to those area. I would prefer to be on the western side of the state, just due to the distance from home in Oregon.

I would appreciate any general info. Thanks a bunch.

Why did you rule out your home state of Oregon?

I live in some of the best Roosevelt hunting in the state and we do that on weekends and stuff.

DR... do you have any experience with the eastern half of Oregon. All of my hunting has been on the west side around Roseburg. That might be an option for us.

There are a lot of hunters in the southwestern part of Montana. There is also a lot of public land, but you will have to hike a long way off the beaten path to be alone. There are not a lot of areas that you can hunt out of your camper and find quality bulls. Wolves have also impacted the area.
