Soon I will be getting a Ruger M77 in 280 ackley with a Nikon ProStaff BDC reticle scope.

I use a Ruger #1B in 30-06 with 165 gr. Accubonds. I have also used my Ruger #1B in 6mm Remington with 100 gr. Partitions. I took one spike bull with the 6mm at about 30 yards in the timber. My son used his 6mm two years ago to take a large cow at 350 yards with one shot with the 90 gr. E-tip! It took her behind her right shoulder and exited the center of her left shoulder. She went all of about 20 yards. Last year he used his 300 WSM and a 180 gr. Accubond to take his second cow. I also enjoy archery hunting and I shoot a Martin Damon Howatt Hunter 60# recurve.

I bought a Kimber Montana 300WSM for a Utah elk hunt I have planned for 2015 (8 long years drawing points for this tag, but I'm sure it will be worth it). The rifle shoots great, but it's so light it will dang near knock the fillings out of your teeth from the recoil. I have a VX3 Leupold scope on it and plan to have it shipped off to have a muzzle break put on it. This is my first Kimber rifle and I love it!

I also got a 300 RUM recently that I would like to customize. The 300 will probably be used mainly for long range paper and steel target shooting.

Use that thing on elk!

The Eastmans Forum is a great place to ask questions like this. I was narrowing my search down to either a 7mm or a 300 win mag 3 years ago. The best advice I received was "Go Shoot'em" Then shoot as much gun as you can comfortably. I know guys that have successfully hunted and harvested elk with a 25-06. Bu I personally like the 300. Not about how big of a gun I have or anything like. Simply. I like it, I shoot it well and the recoil doesn't bother me.

I have a savage model 110 in 270 win. Matthew Blankenship I agree with you as I have harvested about the same number of elk, a moose last year, a buffalo, and a few deer and lopes all with a 270 Remington Model 710 using Remington or Winchester basic factory loads. All DIY on public land. It's all about shot placement and knowing where the gun shoots.

My first Elk rifle was a RMEF Remington 700 in 300 RUM topped off with a Burris Black Diamond scope in 4-16 that shot great but it was a bit heavy to carry and the recoil would really rock me, I sold it and replaced it with a Tikka T3 Light Stainless fluted BBL in 300 Win Mag, topped it off with a Nikon 4-14 it is a great shooter with plain old 180 Gr Rem Core Loks, super light and fits me so nice that it has become my favorite hunting rifle for everything from Elk, Deer, Bear or Moose..... My Backup rifle is a Remington 7600 in 30-06 that literally is a tack driver too.... This year I am trying something a little different I will be using my latest a S & W .460 Mag XVR revolver, It is topped off with a Leupold straight 4 power scope, this puppy shoots great, I will be keeping my shots to 200 yards off shooting sticks.... first hunt is a Black Bear hunt in NY state in September......
