Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knew what I would need to neck down a .30-06 shell to a .25-06? I put my 30-06 down and bought a 25-06 and decided to start reloading. I am learning the basics but would like to use my old brass from my other gun. Any advice would be great and if you have any advice on parts that need to be bought suggestions would also be great.

My friend that is a horrible idea.

Not only is the base of the 30-06 shell not getting sized when you introduce it to it's own 30-06 sizing die, but you will have to do some serious neck turning after you do manage to get them resized.

Others might dissagree, but brass is cheap. Buy 100 25-06 cases from Midwayusa for $50.

Yes I disagree. I built a 25-o6 when it was a wildcat and brass wasn't made. All you have to do is run the 30-06 brass thru a F/L 25-06 sizing die and check OAL. If it is too long, trim it. Pretty simple! Once the case has been formed and shot, neck size only from then on. I'ves formed thousands of pieces of brass this way. (30-06 to 25-05, 250 Savage to 22-250, 243 to 22-250)

Cc, you know you just dated yourself! 25-06 rem was first produced in 1969! I know you get this alot but that was way before I was born! Same with 22-250! 1965 ish right!

Anyways, you can do what cc suggested but I think the smarter thing would be to buy new brass. Not only is it new brass but someone that might have a 30-06 might mistake your brass for theirs or loaded ammo for theirs and try shoot it because of the head stamp. I know it's extremely unlikely but possible and outcome probably wouldn't be that bad. Or you could accidentally grab 30-06 load and get a bullet stuck.



You will love the 25! My old man has been shooting one since… well around 1969! Not to date him or anything! He is rebarrelling his original for a .257 weatherby though, he says he doesn't need two 25s.

I also recommend getting new brass. As Dr.H pointed out, I think it is always a good idea to have correctly headstamped cartridges. However, the bases of the two cartidges are the same dimensions, so running them through the 25-06 die and trimming would work, as CC suggested. As Edelweiss noted, however, you will end up with a bunch of neck turning, if you want top accuracy.

So ... I guess I agree with everybody.

Yep, all good advice........Buy new 25-06 brass, full length size all of them, run them all through the case trimmer and trim to the minimum COL length listed.......now you have a good foundation for load development, remember safety and consistancy are key elements of reloading, good luck.

Thanks guys I was thinking of just getting new brass too. But I thought I would ask and see what more experienced re-loaders thought. Thank you for all the information.
