Killed a lion in January with hounds. We can't run bears in Montana with dogs.
Hunted bear with hounds last year and have another hunt next month, bear with hounds. The hounds we use will also work on cats.
Used to run hounds, lots of work but very rewarding!
one of my favorite hunts to guide and be part of. LOVE chasing a pack of hounds bawling through the hills after both bear and lion.
I've been out a few times with hounds going for bear, it's cool to hear them echo through the forest....but it's a bummer when the dogs get way out there in deep canyons and don't come back for a long time. That's when it go's from a bear hunt to getting the dogs back to the truck before it gets dark. But that's just part of the fun.

Looks like I need about $20,000 worth of trained dogs to get going on lions, and another 5 or 6 dogs to deal with a bear.
Figure $5000 per dog.
Single game (bear) dog are about $2500. Its the dogs that run both bear and cat that comand up to $7500. Bargain.
In reality you definitely dont need 20,000 in dogs....my two dogs cost me a whopping $50 a piece as pups and turned into dang good lion and bear dogs both. If you want an already started dog, then yes your looking at a decent price, but you can get along without a trained dog as well. It just depends on what you know and how much time you are willing to put into training. Hounds are a dangerous thing to get into, as they require massive amounts of time if you want to have great dogs. Also, dont forget all the tracking equipment, dog boxes, snowmobiles...etc... that go into successful hound hunting.
