    Unit 37 Deer

Has anyone hunted unit 37 in Nov for Mule Deer? This will be my first time down there. The country looks pretty good on a map but can't wait to see it in person. Any info would be much appriciated (hunting pressure, quality of bucks, areas). Thanks

37 is where I grew up and have hunted on my parents ranch for the last 30 years and guided on for the last 15. On public you can expect a good 140 to 150 type buck if you put your time in. I am not one to kiss and tell on honey holes as most of my buds will be hunting in those. Put in your time, scout and you will be fine. If you have any generic questions on where to stay, camp, type of terrain, blm vs national forrest, etc just let me know. Here are the last couple of buck I have popped out of 37.

Thanks for the info. I don't want to steal anyones secret spots I was just curious if the majority of the bucks move down in elevation that time of year or if you can still find some in the high country. Also with the high amount of tags is the hunting pressure a factor?

    Hello Jeremy,

Thanks for your advice mentioned above. Nice deer too. A group of us from Pennsylvania drew late season (Jan1-15) archery unit 16 last year and we had a blast! We applied again for this year and drew 37. Using Google Earth, I've been trying to match the terrain we hunted in 16 (near Reserve) to terrain in 37 and have had some luck.

We are after the desolate locations that people are too lazy to get to. We're all in our 30's and are not afraid to put in the effort to get back in the shit. I guess I'm looking for some intel on where to set up camp (we want to camp where we hunt and not drive our truck, but use our ATVs to get to a point, then hike deep).

I've done some serious looking @ the eastern and northern end of the Lincoln National Forest (LNF). That seems pretty rough and steep....almost non-accessible. Lots of the forums I've read guys talk about White Oak and the west end of the LNF. We want to be away from other hunters and see deer. Where would you recommend?

Also, any recommendations on tactics? I have a climbing treestand. would that be worth hauling out? Ground blind? Spot and stalk?

Well my hunt was a success. It only took an hour but I guess the scouting paid off. Took a nice buck that I had seen while scouting. Kinda sucks the season was over so fast but I can't complain. Click image for larger version.

    Nice. Really nice.

One of my buddies is hunting 37 right now and hasn't seen squat. I started muzzle loader hunting there when I was 12 back in the 80's. We saw lot's of deer but none like that guy.

I will tell you this, there will be A TON of hunters in the national forest area, specifically near Baca camp site. I always see lots of camps in there during the season. The weather really isn't a factor on where the deer will be. I hunt in the middle elevation of the area but it's good high and low. Your best bet would be to get out the map and find where you can access BLM land. There is a ton of it in the unit. You will have to walk a bunch but it will get you away from everyone who is too lazy to walk and give you a realistic shot at a good buck.

Nice buck and picture backus12. Sounds like your hunt was short but with a successful sweet outcome. Congratulations to you.
