    Question Drew unit 23 Elk

    Hello everyone,
hope everyone drew some good tags this year. Didn't get any in my state but did get lucky and drew Archery Elk unit 23 in New Mexico. This is my first time hunting there and haven't had time to scout the area yet. If anyone has some information on where to go in this unit it would be greatly appreciated. Anything to help me stay off private land and hopefully get into some Elk. I picked this unit from reading and doing a little research right here on this forum. If anyone has drawn unit 1, or unit 4a archery Elk in Az. I can help you get started. It helps a bunch when you don't have to start with a whole unit. Thanks in advance for any information you want to share.

Congrats, I wish the best for you.

I have diligently studied NM elk hunting for 20 years and have never heard of Unit 23 mentioned as a good unit. I have never seen Unit 23 covered in Eastman's or Huntin Fool.

With that said, two of the best units in the state adjoin Unit 23, and those units are Unit 15 and Unit 16A. My guess would be to start looking in the very northern tip of Unit 23 which will put you right nest to 15 & 16A. It looks like there may be a good chunk of public land in there.

Sorry I thought it was on this forum, maybe it was out of there members section from there magazines. I've hunted unit 1 and know from others that 27 is an awesome unit as well in AZ. unit 23 in NM. runs next to both units and as you said it also runs next to 15 and 16a in NM. with all these good units on all sides I'm hoping it will produce a good bull. Thanks for the information, I will start on the north end of the unit.

Again, my advice is from the adjoining units, I have never set foot in that area.
