Wyoming Antelope caliber

I'm on the verge of buying a rifle that the primary use would be antelope. Originally was thinking the .243 -- now decided on the 25-06, but, doing some further reading thought maybe the .270 would be better in open country where it's windy due to higher BC. even if it's a bit overkill. Too many choices.

I went with a .243win for my specific antelope rifle. Love it!

I shoot 85gr TSX, also awesome! the .243win I believe tends to have higher BC's than the .25-06, but the .270win probably beats both I'm not certain.

I was gonna say get a .243win, but a 25-06 and even the 270 are all great options.

could always get a 6.5-284 Norma w/142gr bullet, possibly from Savage if you want high BC's and wind bucking!

It was funny, last time at the range in WY before antelope opened, 3 of us were there, all getting ready for antelope, all shooting .243win!

What area is this in, I want to go shoot coyotes there, converse county they are only 20 bucks for bounties. Wyoming only allows .23 caliber or bigger for big game animals. Coyotes, use either the smallest or the biggest damn caliber gun u want. You should see what a 338 Papua does to one

Where going to be hunting in Unit 71, I'm now thinking about buying a specialty rig just for antelope, gonna wait till after this trip so I can a better idea on what I should get. Its probably gonna be a toss up between a 25 cal and a 6.5mm since I don't own one in those calibers yet.....

Could always get a .257wby, or heck .240wby! (now available in the vanguard)

Btw almost impossible to beat the .243win when talking about a coyote/antelope combo rifle!

Although probably no right answer from .243 to .270

I have a .25-06 and a .257 Wby and both are great calibers. BUT....after shooting the Wby a lot lately, I am really liking my .25-06 a lot better than the Wby. Wby has more recoil & is lots louder. The thing that I am really thinking about is it worth shooting 10 grains more powder to gain 200-250 fps. I am withholding my final call until after I have shot the Wby at 400& 500 yds. The only reason I bought the Wby was a good friend was getting rid of it and I couldn't pass it up...too good a buy. If I end up not really liking it that much, I'll get my $$$ out of it!

Guess I've had too much success for a lot of years with my old Ruger 25-06.

Hey HuskyMusky, whats your recipe for the 85 grain, TSX load. I came up with some super accurate loads using 100 grain Nosler Solid Base BTs behind 46 grains of IMR 7828 and Win large rifle primers, 3/8 inch groups.

Hey CC, let me know if you sell, might be interested. A 240 WBY sounds good too. I also been eye balling a Cooper M52 rifle in 6.5x284. There is going to be three of us on this trip, my third buddy has an old Browning BPR, in 25-06 that he is going to take along. He said it shoots great and it is his favorite deer rifle. I'll be watching to see how it does....He loaded some hot 100 grain Nosler Balistic tips.

I'll also be taking my Browning SS Stalker, in 270WSM for my backup rifle and will probly shoot one of my Does with it just to see how it does compared to the other calibers...

I shoot the federal 85gr TSX factory load.

They all seem to shoot about the same out of my rifle though.

Thought about trying that superformance 80gr gmx load from hornady, but I see little reason to switch.

My 25-06 loves the 100 gr Nosler BT also. If I decide I want to sell the Wby, I'll let you know. It will be after hunting season, because i still have some more work to do on loads.

[6mm Remington]

Nothing wrong with a 6mm Remington there either guys! My son's 6mm is shooting the 90 gr. E-tip and it has taken antelope, deer, and two falls ago, his first elk, a large cow with one shot at 350 yards! I shoot a 6mm Remington with 100 gr. Nosler Partitions at 3140 fps mostly for antelope, but have also used my wife's 25-06 and my own 30-06 with great success. Hard to go wrong with a good 6mm Remington!

Up to this point my pronghorn rifle has been a Ruger #1 in .270 Winchester. This year I'm working with a Savage in .25/06 shooting a 115 grain Nosler BT and so far it's looking good. I chose the 115 over the 100 grain bullet for a little better BC.
