How big should the Bulls be around the 4th of July?

Did some camping, fishing, scouting in my elk area this week. The few bulls I saw did not seem to be that big. I was thinking they would be either bigger or farther along in the growth stage. If they were going to be a 6x6 by this fall, would they have six points or close to it right now? I saw some five points but they did not have very good length.

Yes, if they're going to be a good 6x6, they will be that by now.

Good question. I'm bad at judging them in the velvet and often wonder if I'm looking at a good one or not.

WYrider, are you scouting the Bighorns?

Yeah, we saw a ton of elk, maybe close to a thousand or so. But most where cows and calves. Gave me a chance to test out my new spotting scope.

Here is grainy picture taken from 1000 yards yesterday morning (7/06). In total there was 13 bulls in that group and a total of 23 seen that morning.

The big boy in the center with his head down is the a no brainer! Still about a month to grow.

He most definitely was the best. Really wide, and body wise much lighter in color and bigger in mass than the rest. Just over the ridge there were two more bulls in his caliber, but this one was still a little better. I will keep my tabs on them and hopefully he grows into something I will recommend to my buddy to fire his muzzleloader at.
