    2013 Wyoming Moose

Hello everyone. Doing some research for my uncle and cousin....they are not computer savy like me!
uncle is in later 50's, and my cousin has some physical limitations due to an accident he had a few years back.
They have 11 Moose PP's, and I think this year will be PP # 12.....or maybe they have 10 and this year will be 11. Anyways, they cant both afford a fully outfitted hunt, but would be interested in a drop camp or possibily hiring someone if they have success to help pack out the moose.

So does anyone have any suggestions on areas? They had planned to hunt, hopefully, on a ranch by afton/thayne along the idaho border. But the last time they talked to the rancher he said the moose pop was way way down due to wolves.

They dont really care where in Wy they go.

Any suggestions on drop camps or people to hire to help pack out a moose or areas to look into will be appreciated.

Back in High school we hunted the northern bighorns by Burgess junction, and we saw some moose. small bulls and some cows. but that was over 15 years ago!!

I also hear alot about medicine bow, unit 26 among others..........

    Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

Burgess junction is getting some decent moose now days! I've seen two this year that I definitely wouldn't hesitate to shoot if I had a tag...

If you ended up coming over here there are a lot of people that would help you pack it out! I have horses and I would before than happy to help!

They'll need more points to have a shot at drawing the Bighorns.

Please check if they have 11 points or 12 points going into next year. It may not sound like much but it is a big difference when it comes to what units they could potential draw. My buddy has 11 going into next year, and he still has a few years of buying points ahead of him.

    Hey Ilovethewest,
I don't know much but Don't hunt the Cody area. The wolves ,and grizzlies for that matter have decimated the moose in that area. I'm not looking at the area map but when I hunted Reg. G for deer in 1988, there were moose everywhere. I applied for moose back then ($350.00 non res.) but didn't draw. Too bad because I was coming down off the mtn. and looked over towards my truck and thought what the hell is that ? I looked through my bino's and there was a bull moose that would score pretty dam high 50 yds from my truck...I had problems with cow moose with calves. They were everywhere. These days, To avoid wolves and grizzlies, Mtn. Mama Jen is correct. Hunt the Bighorns, Or, if you can draw the area I talked about. Don't know the area of top of my head. either one.No wolves or Griz to speak of in Reg. G (deer) . Good chance to kill nice bull if I say so.
    Good luck !

After looking at the MRS I would listen to what HuntWYODon suggested. You will have the best chances to draw an area in Region G. Like Elkoholic307 they don't have enough points for the Bighorns. and they don't have enough points for the Snowy Range. Good luck

All units that offered non-resident bull moose tags in 2012:

Unit 1: Will likely take 14 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 2: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 3: Will likely take 11 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 4: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 5: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 6: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 9: Will likely take 10 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 10: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 11: Will likely take 8 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 16: Will likely take 13 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 17: Will likely take 11 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 18: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 20: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 21: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 22: Will likely take 11 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 23: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 24: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 25: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 26: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 27: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 30: Will likely take 10 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 34: Will likely take 14 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 35: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 36: Will likely take 12 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 38: Will likely take 15 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points
Unit 42: Will likely take 15 points in 2013 for a chance to draw on points

Your uncle and cousin are right on the threshold of drawing a good hunt, but it is kind of a big deal if they have 11 or 12 points going into 2013.

If they have 11 points they would have a chance at Unit 3, 9, 11, 17, 22, 30. With 11 points going into 2013, if I were in their shoes, I'd buy points for another 2-3 years since the units they can draw are not among the better units in the state. My buddy has 11 points going into 2013 and he has decided to hold out.

If they have 12 points they would have a chance at Unit 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 30, 35, 36. With 12 points going into 2013, there are some pretty good units they can draw. Several of these moose units that can be hunted DIY, even glassing from your pick-up with good success.

It would likely be 10+ years before they would catch up and draw in the Bighorns on points.
