Factory Loads Too Hot?

Bob,

Can't agree with you more. I use hearing protection hunting ducks, doves, varmits, etc.. I haven't for Big Game but will now. Looking for something that allows me to hear nature and blocks shots and other loud noises.

I use Walkers Game Ears quite a bit for turkey and small game hunting. When it's windy or just for general big game I use a pair of foam plugs that have a band that goes under your chin, you wear them around your neck and it gets to be second nature to put them on before firing. I would like to have a pair of Sport Ears but they are a little steep for me to swing right now.

A little OT but I would love to do a turkey "slam" they are a passion!

Sounds like excess pressure, but maybe some other factors should be considered. What was the outside temperature? Did you leave your gun and/or ammo in the sun before, or between shooting? Did you load a round into a warm/hot gun and leave it there for a period of time before firing? All of these, including minimum headspace and short chamber leade can cause excess pressure. The copper bullets are notoriously long for their weight(s), and may not be compatible with your gun in this weight. You could always try a lighter bullet (which Barnes recommends) than you normally shoot, as it will be shorter in length.

Good Lord! How long are those spurs in the third picture? I'm thinking that bird never stepped on a rock. Thanks for sharing!

Barnes is in the process of pressure testing that lot of ammunition as we speak. Waiting for their response. It was about 65 degrees that day and gun and ammo were out of the Sun. I really feel that it was the ammo, as stated earlier I had no issue with Nosler Custom loads with the same bullet weight, muzzle velocity, etc.

The spurs are on my Ocellated and were just slightly over 2 inches. It was in the top 5 of the NWTF Records at the time I harvested it. Not sure where it is now.
