    South Dakota Elk

I was lucky enough to draw a rifle tag for unit H2 this year and being in Grad School and living on the complete opposite end of the state I only made it out once in August to do minimal scouting and didn't see much. Gonna be out there Oct 5-14. Will they still be rutting then? Just wondering if anyone from that end of the state has any tips or advice for me. Thanks a ton.

I hunt in eastern wyoming in the black hills. Usually you can here them bugle and use that as a locator. They have been talking since labor day weekend. In mid october, they can be very quiet. This last week they have been in the peak of the rut. It is hot out and they have been really active at night. The bugling hasnt really started til about 15 min before dark. I would count on hearing them early in the morning.

Here are the Elk we were lucky enough to harvest in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Luck was surely on our side, right place at the right time.
