    Pop's Buck

Here is a picture of Pop's area 7 buck. We only hunted two days toward the end of the season, but were able to still find this buck. I had mis-marked the buck when he laid down, so I ended up walking within 15 yards of him. Pop was directly behind me, so I quickly reached over and turned down the scope on his Remington 270 since Pop is an old school, open sight lever action Savage 243 shooter. I told him to walk forward ready for the world to erupt. When Pop did, the smaller buck jumped up at only 7 yards or so which caused this buck to bolt as well. Pop made an amazing shot on the buck which was running quartering away downhill. At 40 yards, Pop placed the 130gr bullet dead center in the neck.

I believe he was old and regressing. His teeth were worn down considerably and had a huge roman nose. I believe a buddy and I tried to get on this one last year during archery at which time he was a lot bigger, closer to the magical 30" mark. Body on this deer was huge as well, looking like a horse standing next to the 3x2 he was with.
