Our plan came right together. My Brother and I finally got a Steens tag. I decided years ago it was time to go after some big high desert bucks while we still get around pretty good. We were fortunate enough to find these guys together on opening day about a mile from where we saw them in August. Great time!! Great hunt!! The 18 hours to pack out just added to the adventure. The Steens unit in Oregon isn't getting great reviews lately, so we feel really fortunate to find these big mature bucks on a public land hunt.
It was a wild experience. It was great for both of us to get a personal best on the same trip. The bar is raised now. I spent many hours with David Long's book, and we spent about 50-60 hrs on the hoof scouting. I found that I already had alot of the super light equipment that he uses along with some of his tactics. It sure got us a little more confident going in. We went in with enough food and supplies on our backs for 10 days. I think it brought us good karma. Funny that we turned around and packed it all back out in one day. You have to laugh at what we do to ourselves sometimes.
about 8800 ft. lots of bitter and mahogany just like it should be. Oregon is working hard to push back the juniper and try to restore the bitterbrush. I don't know if they could ever get rid of the invasive grasses, but all the efforts people are making including th large ranch owners are pretty cool.
