Sad deal, MO hikers die

This happened on the other side of the state from me.. It was unreal how warm the weather was last friday, into saturday morning. The wife and I were out around midnight on friday, and it was 65 degrees.. Woke up satuday morning and it was around 20.. I guess the front pushed through the Eastern part of the state a little later.

Sad deal for sure, but I don't think it can be stressed enough how you must always be prepared for inclement weather, especially in the winter.

Very sad, going unprepared on day hikes is a very dangerous adventure. Sorry for the remaining family.

Wow that is horrifying! I couldn't know how the father felt trying to keep his kids from freezing. Terrible way to lose your life.

The weather can turn on a dime. Cold freezing rain kills unless your prepared for it or can take measures to combat it. It sounds like getting turned around and lost might of had a factor too. I'm just sad hearing stories like this. It goes to show how fragile life can be.

I live in the St. Louis area where this happened, actually live within 10 miles of Scott AFB where the father worked. There has been lots of local coverage as you would expect. Saturday morning was cloudy but around 60 degrees. Started raining in the late afternoon and the temps sank about 10 degrees per hour until the front moved thru. The trails around this area are nothing compared to what is found out west. Most folks I know that use them only take a water bottle at most. Maybe its because the area is so metropolitan that folks become over confident that bad things can't happen. The Ozarks are nothing compared to many of the national forests out west but obviously can be just as deadly if you are unprepared. I had a co-worker die on those same trails about 6 years ago, although it was not from exposure.
