Unit 54 2nd season deer?

I was hoping to find out what elevation I should start looking for deer during the 2nd rifle season. I'll be taking my son for his first muley hunt this fall. Also was wondering if deer will be in the sage flats north of the RV park west of Gunnison on Hwy 50. Were not looking for anything giant. Just an opportunity to see some animals. Thanks in advance!

Mule deer will be at all altitudes. The older smarter bucks will be the highest.

This will all depend on the weather. Snow drives deer down much sooner than elk.

54 is kind of weird and seemed to get hit harder. There'll be deer up high, some in the transition area and then there's some that don't leave town that will drive you up a wall.
