High country early season deer hunt
A buddy and I are debating to apply for the early season high country rifle hunt in unit 43 this year. It looks like the last couple years it has taken 8 pts to draw and we have 8 pts. We like the idea of a high country deer hunt for hopes of lower hunting pressure but also with us both being from the flat land ( Minnesota and Ohio ) we would like to go early season to avoid conflict with our whitetail hunts.
So my question is should we use our points this year on 43 or is it better to hold out for high country tags in either 82 (82, 86, 861) or 74 (72, 73) which both look like will need 10 pts?
Any specific reason? Is there a unit you would recommend over another?
I haven't hunted any of those units. I am building points there for a similar purpose, and my information is based on my own research.
43 is off my radar because it is on everybody elses since it has been blown open on TV. There are a bunch of archery hunters that push the deer around before the early rifle season.
It used to be a sleeper, and now isn't. I am sure there are still some stellar deer in 43, but for me it would be worth it to me to wait a couple years for the other awesome units.
I WOULD NOT burn 8 points on 43. I hunted it 2 years ago muzzle loader season and was not very impressed. I may give it 1 more try if I can draw it 2nd choice again because there are some areas I didnt get to I would like to check out, but Im not even sure I want to try that. Besides what BB said about it it gets lots of hikers and backpackers and is was to close to aspen and all the rich people. It is beautiful country and I really enjoyed back packing it but not really my type of place to hunt.
