I know if you stick close to the river in SD there are mulies on either side and some big ones but they are smart and really hard to find. I'll try to let you know what my buddy comes up with this year if I remember. If I forget pm me and I'll ask him. By the way that deer you shot is a monster. We have seen several of those where I hunt but they are always on private ground. One of these days I'm hoping one makes a mistake!
Now therefore, please take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me.

We have a tiny bit of private land that is ok for pheasants and whitetail, but our muleys are all public land. They all make mistakes. You just have to be at the right place at the right time.

That would be helpful tdcour. I'd probably be most interested to see if EHD hits the area again this year. Its starting to get pretty dry again right now in ND and without a good rain soon I think the EHD will be bad again. I'd probably just do an otc res tag if I went to SD. I've heard you can shoot either whitetail or muleys with a res tag so if the whitetail population was in disarray I'd probably skip out for a few more years. I always find monster whitetails in my scope when I have a muley tag and big muleys when I have a whitetail tag. It sure would be nice to be able to go after whatever perks my interest.

I think you are right about the res having an either deer tag. That is what i heard to. I know that is the case for rifle but not positive on rifle. EHD didn't hit too hard once you got North of I90 with the exception of the black Hills. It will be a few years until the populations in the hills and Se South Dakota get back to where they were. Still big deer around though

Nice looking buck Roscoe! What part of the state was that in? I'm guessing west central or far west? Going out with dad with smoke pole in a few weeks hoping to find some good deer!

This isn't my largest buck, but it was one of my more favorite hunting adventures and a good deer for ND.
    That's a great buck.

Not sure if this thread is still active but we will see. I am thinking of doing a SD archery deer hunt in 2015. I would be looking at a mule deer, but would have no problem taking a whitetail if presented an opportunity. I would likely focus in the western side of the state; black hills, buffalo gap, and the NW corner is what I'm thinking right now. What are your experiences with these areas? Can a guy have a chance at a muley? It looks like the black hills have an abundance of roads/public access points. Any insight on the pressure the area receives from archers? I was originally thinking of doing a backpack hint but I honestly don't think it's necessary in these areas. Anybody have experience hunting this part of the state?
