    Wyoming Unit 48 - Expectations

Hey, just wanting to see what others that may have hunted this unit think expectations should be this year. I spoke to the biologist who said the winter was mild and the summer has been really wet in the Shirley Basin. That said, horns should be better than last year when we hunted 63-2 to the west. Top goats in there were topping out around 14" with a flyer or two. Most were in the 11-13" range. I understand that they are cutting tags in 48, and that it's not near what it was 3-4 years ago, but I'm still hoping to find something that will push or exceed 15". We're trying to draw out early in the Hanna Draw HMA and hunt the last couple days of Sept and 1st of Oct., but we'll see. Plan on camping on the Miracle Mile and do some fishing as well - it was lights out last year. Thanks all! Just interested in hearing what opinions are out there!

From all indications it should be a very decent year for horns and I'd say that if you have sufficient time to spend in the unit that you should be able to find a goat or two that breaks 15". Good luck, have fun, and be safe out there.

If I've read things right, most of the HMAs in the unit open up to unlimited hunters around 10/8. Just check the ranch rules to be certain, and make sure you have a permission slip to be there. There's also a good amount of public land, but just need to know where the boundaries are when you're in the neighborhood of private land. Good luck!

Yea both HMAs are unlimited for antelope starting the 8th. We should get there around the 12th and hunt 4 days. Not going to be too picky but I would like to break 13". I spoke with the game warden and he said that shouldn't be a problem. Good luck to you also!
