Unit 45, Ok after the fire?
Hi all, first post. Me and a buddy drew unit 45 bull elk, first elk hunt for both of us. Drove up yesterday just to get an idea and look around a little. Got rained on a lot so we couldn't hike much. Drove up highway 63 and 223. After a little research it looks like we should have taken davis-willow up but we overlooked it. I know there was a big fire up there at the start of the summer and am wondering how the elk population was affected?
Also since this is my first elk hunt, any pointers about the unit? My plan is to scout a little more and most likely gonna camp as far as I can take my truck. Then hike as deep as we can every day of the hunt. Thanks for any info!
Some places in Pecos Wilderness are still off limits. Check Santa Fe National forest website for detailed maps and trail boundaries. Some places around Jaraso and Tres Laguanas have closed trail heads. The may open after later September. Jaraso fire effected areas around Pecos Baldy. Sounds like oyu drove up to Iron Gate (2230. When is your hunt? Send me PM if you'd like.
