    I drew an Elkhorn Tag

    Hey guys,

So I was fortunate enough to draw an elk tag in the elkhorns (380) and was curious if any of you guys have experience in there or know what is a good area of it to start in? Anything would be appreciated.

Luke, since you're not getting much feedback, I'll tell you a few things I know about the area even tough I havn't hunted it myself. I live in Helena and know a number of hunters who have hunted it in recent years. First of all there are some huge bulls that live in the unit. By huge I mean over 350! Balance that with the fact that many very good hunters have come up empty handed. It's not a slam dunk!
A good starting point might be to explore some of the access roads in the Townsend area. If you can do that early, like now, when the big bulls are with the cows you might locate something you'd be interested in and then try fo him openning day. Another area you might try once the season opens is some of the lower country on the south end east of Boulder. A prominent power line runs thru that area that I have seen in the background of several kill photos. Hope this helps a little.

A lot of folks consider this to be a great archery tag and only marginal rifle. Better get out there

Interesting... My dad's friend drew the tag last year and said the same thing. He ended up taking a 340 bull with a bow and had only rifle hunted previously. He said it wasn't the biggest bull they came across but taking it with a bow was definitely worth it. Might be a little late in the game for the OP but food for thought if I ever draw.

yeah interested to see how it went as well. a buddy has drawn the tag twice and harvested two bulls in the 330-340" range, but we hunted our tails off through archery and rifle season on both occasions. Like Mike said, its definately not a slam dunk!!!
