Great 1st Bull! and great story
Just yesterday was the last day of my Arizona Coues Deer hunt and unfortunately, I have to eat tag soup! I missed my shot, at dark, night before last. I took a 500 yd shot on a gray ghost that was up the ridge on a 20-25 degree uphill slope. Needless to say, I am sure I shot over his back. I knew I was going to be high, but I didn't know how much.
After that miss, I went back to my RV and found an app for my phone that will calculate the hold over for long shots shooting up/down hills. The last time this happened to me was back in the '70's when my cousin and I unloaded our rifles on 3 blacktail bucks running together. We were shooting about 400 yards downhill and between the 2 of us we blew through 10 shots. On a shot that long, you should usually have plenty of time to input the range, slope, wind direction and speed if any, then press calculate. It shows you about how you should aim through your scope.
I am finally heading home this weekend after being gone for several months. The good news is archery season starts on December 13, 2013 and goes through January 31, 2014. If I happend to get a Coues buck in December, during the rut, I can get a tag for the 2014 Coues seasons and start hunting once again on January 1. There is still plenty of big game hunting in my very near future.
