    Looking at units 7,24,or 45 for 2014

I am a nonresident and have 6 elk points. I have done a little more research and if I want to go to unit 7 or 24 I will have to wait a couple more years, I thought I had 1 more point. So now I am thinking about 45 for a diy backpack hunt or unit 50 or unit61. I know there is wilderness in both of these units, but is there much hunting outside of the wilderness or do you pretty much need a guide? If I need a guide can you give me some recomndations. Thanks for any info.

I see you went in and changed you're entire post after I asked if you were talking about elk! Unlike all the newbie first time posters, at least you're not looking for anyone's honey hole, LOL!

In the latest Eastman's MRS Units 45 and 50 got moved into "Blue chip" units. They will now get crushed with applicants and likely applicants with 7 & 8 points. There are just not that many top units that someone with less than max can draw, so soon as there is publicity it ruins it for those with less than max.

You should have a decent shot at drawing an Area 7 tag with your points. This area gets a lot of pressure though since they give out so many tags. The archery season has a lot less hunters however. Area 24 gets bombarded by more and more applicants every year, so drawing that one is next to impossible without max points.

Unit 7 is a great unit, but only if you have your access figured out first as it has lots of private and lots of private you can't get on. There's spots here and there that residents figure out over time but as a NR I wouldn't hunt it without a primary and 2 backup pieces of property. You also need to see the amount of pressure your pieces of property get and the only way to do that is be there during hunting season. I got to hunt it 3 out of 4 years when I was a resident ( 2 bull tags, 1 cow tag). I defintely wouldn't waste max points on it unless I had a big piece of property lined up. Weather can be a factor too and you can get snowed out and the elk will move down on private property. Bring tire chains!
