My vanguard mak s weighs just over 2 pounds. I will agree the head is not great but it works ok.
The number one thing for me is a solid head, then lightweight, then stability, then size. I hate the slow droop of your FOV when you want to check something out a little closer that you get with cheaper heads. I went with the Manfrotto 327RC2 head... it is a little heavier than some, but rock solid... even with an 80mm scope and a camera attachment. Combined with a Promaster T525P, the whole setup weighs 3.375 lbs and is as solid as any tripod I've used.
