Get the new Leica 1000R. Angle comp from 10 to 600. Line of sight to 1000. No ballistics. Best for bow and "range dial shoot" for rifle hunting.
Second choice would be Leupold 1000i TBR. Original 1000 used ballistics in bow mode, don't touch it.
The 1600 has no angle comp under 100. Sold mine and bought the Leupy 1000i.
I have a leica 1600 and I love it. I got multiple readings off of a metal silver colored grain bin at 1999 yds. I have ranged antelope with mine at 800+ yards. I also found it very helpful for planning a stalk as mentioned above.
I have a leupold, 600 or 450 I don't remember, I bought a couple of years ago and its a joke as far as clarity goes. I thought it would be comparable to their scopes or binoculars but it isn't even close. Maybe they have come a ways in the last couple of years, but I doubt it.
Leica 1600 for me too. Reliable, lightweight, quality optics and i've hit stuff over 1300 yards with it. I had a Leupold and got rid of it b/c the leica display is brighter and the glass is better. Leupold has lots of bells and whistles that just distracted me
Oh as far as ranging it ranges deer well to 300 yards, which doesn't really help much.
